Earth Overshoot Day Deutschland 2021

German Overshoot Day: We're Using Up Our Planet's Resources Too Fast

What is Overshoot Day?

Overshoot Day is the date when humanity's demand for resources exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in a year. In 2023, Overshoot Day fell on August 2nd, meaning that we have already used up all the resources that the Earth can sustainably provide for the entire year.

Germany's Overshoot Day

Germany's Overshoot Day was May 5th, 2023. This means that if everyone in the world lived like Germans, we would have already used up all of the Earth's resources for the year by May 5th. Germany is ranked 10th in the world for its ecological footprint, meaning that its citizens consume more resources than the average person on the planet.

Like the rest of the world, Germany is largely unprepared to deal with the consequences of overshoot. These consequences include climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. We need to take action now to reduce our ecological footprint and protect our planet for future generations.
